Ok so let’s discuss the latest even of Marvel, the Secret Empire which was building up for months. I will start from the beginning for all those that are wondering what the hell just happened all of a sudden and Cap turned into this filth of nature, betraying everyone and everything he ever stood for!! Wow there… I am emotionally off.
So let’s go back in time and let’s figure this out.
It’s 2014 and Captain America is facing one of the biggest challenges of his entire career, and mind you, his career is quite big considering he does not age like the rest. Steve Rogers is facing a super villain with the name Iron Nail in Captain America #21 who sucks the Super Soldier Serum out from Captain America and even though Cap is not dead, he loses everything that the Serum gave him, including his youth and even though Iron Nail attempts to finish the job by killing Steve Rogers he fails due to the timely rescue of Sam Wilson aka the Falcon who also, later on, picks up the shield to become Captain America.
Now let’s move a bit to the future, and more precisely to the Avengers Standoff events where a hacker with the codename of “whisperer” leaks some top secret files of a S.H.I.E.L.D. security program with the codename of Kobik, which would allow authorities to use cosmic cube fragments to make changes to the fabric of reality itself!
Right from the bat of the Avengers Standoff issue 0, Bucky sneaks into a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where he watches a video of a girl being born out of the fragments of the cosmic cube which eventually would take the name Kobik and due to the inability of S.H.I.E.L.D. to get rid of her they agree to harness her enormous power by creating a prison called Pleasant Hill for the super villains that will essentially wipe their memories of anything bad they ever did and turn them into nice little puppets.
Not to prolong all that much, as usually, things found a way to go terribly wrong and the Avengers were called to shut this place down along comes old man Rogers wherein a near death experience with Crossbones, gets saved by Kobik who also gives him back the old good superhuman powers he once possessed!
What a cool story that could be if everything ended just right here. But…no. Here is probably exactly where everything started.
Here enters Captain America: Steve Rogers where we finally get to see Captain America betraying everything and seemingly becoming a HYDRA operative an organization he was a member since his youth, recruited by a woman that helped her mother. We see all of those memories unravel in front of our eyes and they are perfectly told. Some might even wonder how all this time we haven’t saw it coming.
Well the answer to that might be “because it’s not real”. All those memories were implanted to Steve Rogers brain by Kobik who in return was manipulated from no one else but Papa Red Skull while inside Pleasant Hill and all those memories implanted to him by Kobik was nothing else but an elaborate plan of Red Skull to turn his worst enemy into his biggest ally.
Things, of course, did not turn exactly as he planned because Steve Rogers saw an opportunity of bringing the old days of HYDRA glory back in the purest sense while Red Skull was fighting for a modern era HYDRA so together with Selvig, Captain America tries to “remove” Red Skull.
From that point on, Captain America starts the planning of the hostile take over we are seeing on the newest Marvel Trailer for the Secret Empire Event.
Secret Empire #0 Review

Now, the Avengers, the Champions, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men and more will be tested. How will they Marvel Universe cope with this shattering betrayal by the most trusted among them?
As you might have figured out already, Secret Empire was building up for a while but April 19, 2017 was the date that finally eveything came to light. We knew that Cap will eventually come through with his plan and that his identity will get public and Secret Empire #0 was the perfect revelation.
I have to admit that usually I am not exactly impressed with #0 issues due to the lack of action since they are mostly setting up a template for the rest of the story that is going to follow starting #1 but this one is quite different.
I believe that due to the prior works of preparing us for this day Spencer does an amazing job of bringing us right into the center of Cap’s betrayal. Steve Rogers comes all out with a bulletproof that only a man like him could pull through.
Under attack from various sides, Marvel’s Super Heroes are fighting all around the world, and not even, the universe as well and at the point where always seems lost, the tables turn around and get on the top. Win feels sweet and even though there has been tremendous loss that cannot be uncovered the art of Daniel Acuna changes from dark to light and Nick Spenser manipulates the feelings of our heroes changing them from gloom to something that holds a light of hope.
That all ends with a bang. Steve Rogers hits right at the moment when everyone feels relaxed enough to let their guards down even though unnecessary since no one ever realizes till the very end that Captain America, Americas proudest hero, is behind all this. In fact, it seems that no one really believed it for much longer than the end of the #0 issue.
Acuna makes a great comeback for this comic. Some times people forget how hard is to be an artist and when you read Secret Empire, Acuna makes sure you remember. From the battles in the outer space to the inner city streets and the Helicarrier command, he makes certain that you are right there, that you feel every feeling and that you see every expression change in the faces of all.
Overall Secret Empire #0 is an amazing introduction to a comic event that will shake the entire Marvel Universe. From art to story, we see something that a lot of comic events are missing and this is the element of background. We, subconsciously, followed around the entire turn of Captain America to Captain HYDRA and we now are finally getting to experience it at a whole different level.
